The basics

Wrist wrapsexplained in 30 seconds.

Wrist wraps are elastic wraps that you wind tightly around your wrist joint during strength training. They have a thumb loop to keep the wrap in place and a velcro closure to lock in the tension.

Their job is simple: keep your wrist in a neutral, straight position when a lot of weight presses down on it. That stops your wrist from bending backwards on the bench press, overhead press or dips.

Why

3 reasons forwrist wraps.

Wrist wraps aren't an accessory for show. This is what they actually do for you.

More power transfer

A straight wrist transfers force directly from your forearm to the bar. Less leakage, more weight moved.

Less wrist strain

The wrap absorbs peak loads and prevents your wrist from overextending on heavy sets.

More confidence

Firm wrists give you confidence. You focus on your lift, not on your joint.

Application

For whichexercises do you use them?

Wrist wraps are made for pressing exercises: movements where the weight rests on your palm and your wrist wants to bend backwards.

  • Bench press and incline press
  • Overhead press and military press
  • Weighted dips
  • Front squats and clean variations
  • Handstand push-ups and heavy push-ups

They don't help on pulling exercises like deadlifts and rows. For those, use lifting straps.

Warm-up setsNoLet your wrists get used to the load on their own
Working sets above ±75% 1RMYesThis is where your wrist bends most easily

No substitute for technique

Wrist wraps reinforce a good wrist position, they don't fix a bad one. Keep the bar low in your palm, above your forearm.

Choosing

What should youlook for when buying?

  • Stiffness: too loose gives no support, too stiff limits your movement. Choose a firm but elastic wrap.
  • Closure: a wide velcro strap that doesn't come loose during your set.
  • Thumb loop: handy when putting it on, but take your thumb out while lifting.
  • Finish: stitching that doesn't fray, even after months of use.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions aboutwrist wraps.

What is the difference between wrist wraps and lifting straps?

Wrist wraps stabilise your wrist on pressing exercises like the bench press. Lifting straps improve your grip on pulling exercises like deadlifts and rows. They are two different tools.

Should I always wear wrist wraps?

No. Use them on heavy working sets. Do light sets and warm-ups without them, so your wrists stay strong on their own.

How tight should wrist wraps be?

Tight enough that your wrist doesn't bend backwards, but your fingers must move freely. Tingling or a cold hand means too tight.

Are wrist wraps suitable for beginners?

Yes, especially with wrist complaints or heavier pressing exercises. But learn the right wrist position without wraps first.

How long do wrist wraps last?

Years with normal use. Replace them when the elasticity fades or the velcro no longer grips properly.
